The Darfur protest – part one

December 13th, 2006 by James

Protest against the rape of women in Darfur, London 10th December 2006.

Sunday was a global day of action for Darfur; there were participants in more than 40 countries.

As activists gathered, this man pricked a finger and smeared his blood on his placard.

The protest began outside the Sudanese Embassy in central London. This woman chanted things such as “UN forces for Darfur” into the microphone, and everyone chanted after her. She had fled Darfur and spoke to the crowd on a stage on the day. I did not get her name, but I will contact Amnesty for it and update the blog and relevant pictures.

While sky news were here to document the event, I did not see a squeak of it on their news channel. Pinochet dying did not help.

The march begins.

I was talking to my younger brother (16 years old) recently and mentioned I was at the Darfur protest.

He said “What’s a Darfur?”

That made me really appreciate the girl below, who must be around the same age as him. She knows what is happening in her world and has the courage to try and do something about it. There is hope for the next generation after all.

The march moved from the Sudanese embassy to Whitehall, facing Downing Street.

Story will continue with another blog tomorrow.

i love the content in these photos. especially the one above “The march begins.” Anyways, I really dislike(d) Pinochet and I’m glad he’s dead, but they should’ve mentioned this protest on the news also. history is important, but so is what’s currently going on in the world.
